Surgery FAQ

Questions / Answers to Commonly Asked Surgical Questions.

Q.
Do you require a preliminary exam for surgical patients?
A.
Yes, we require an exam on all of our patients to establish a doctor/client relationship as well as to determine the health of the patient and the surgical procedure that is needed.
Q.
Do you require your surgery patients be current on their vaccinations?
A.
Yes, we require our surgery patients to be up to date on their Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, and Bordetella vaccines.
Q.
Will I be able to talk to a doctor or a technician before or after the surgery?
A.
Yes, you will be able to talk to a doctor and/or a technician before and after the surgery. They will explain all aspects of the surgery to you as well as answer any questions that you may have before the surgery. After the surgery is completed you will be contacted by our staff to update you on your pet’s condition. At this time we would also schedule a time for you pick up your pet.

Q.
Do you offer any pre-surgical lab work? Why should I get pre-surgical lab work?
A.
Yes, we highly recommend pre-surgical blood work for all of our surgical candidates. We also encourage our clients to have a fecal exam and any other necessary tests prior to surgery. This will allow us to see how your pet’s internal organs are functioning as well as to check for anemia or dehydration. Internal parasites can lead to weakness, anemia, and nutritional deficiencies so we like to make sure our patients are parasite free prior to surgery. Our recent records show that as many as 25% of the patients going through presurgical workups had their surgeries postpone due to abnormal findings.

Q.
What type of anesthesia do you use on your patients? Is it very safe?
A.
We use Isofluorane on our surgery patients. It is a very safe and widely used anesthesia.

Q.
Do you administer fluids to patients while they are in surgery?
A.
We offer a safety and comfort package to our surgical patients that includes pre-surgical blood work, IV catheterization, administration of IV fluids, as well as a nail trim.

Q.
Do you sterilize your surgical equipment? Do you use the same instruments on each patient?
A.
We use a freshly sterilized pack for each surgery. These packs will only be used on your pet before they are scrubbed and re-sterilized for future surgeries. Our doctors perform a surgical scrub prior to each surgery and maintain strict sterile protocols. Our surgery table is sanitized prior to each surgery as well as in between patients.

Q.
Will my pet be monitored while they are in surgery and/or recovery?
A.
All of our patients are monitored by both a technician and sophisticated equipment that monitors heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate as well as how well they are receiving oxygen.
